So starting decorating the girls room, re-arranging the layout, buying & assembling wardrobes on the first week of the school holidays may seem like madness but honestly its not.
Let me explain...there are 3 girls who share a room, 18, 12 & 5. Now everyone in this room claims not to make a mess (that'll be the fairies then) and yet the room was a tip. Abba, the eldest, has an aversion to hanging or simply putting clothes away and this resulted in a ridiculous pile of clothing under her loft bed.
Loopy, 5, likes to play with everything and had managed to store an impressive number of toys/books etc under her bed as well as a scattering of them across the floor.
Lolly, the almost teenager was starting to show traits of both and had a bit of a haul at the end of her cabin bed, under it was & in truth still is a selection of toys that I cant find a home for yet or they're toys that I quite simply dont like that much.
Now think if this were you would you want your daughter to have a sleepover at my house? Nope didnt think so. Lolly would like to have a few friends to sleep over during the holidays but I was just too ashamed & embaressed to let anyone outside the family see the state of her room.
This was a bit of a revalation in honesty. Im really a take me as you find me sort, you learn to be with so many in such a small home. So it made me think just how bad is it that I would prefer my kids to miss out on socialising?
Well its a tale with a happy ending ( well a happy start ). Lolly chose a pink to paint 2 of the walls and the two younger girls have one side of the room for sleeping. A cream will divide the room and Abba is to choose a colour for her corner. Ikea have come to the rescue with a wardrobe for Abba and will in the next few weeks fit the other 2 out. Eventually I will sort doors out but the kitty isnt a bottomless pit (more like shallow scraping)
And I almost resent paying full price for something! Ive been so good at car booting & upcycling that it kinda hurts to pay the asking price. :)
Pin boards have been started! Yes I know that friends could sleep over without boards but they do look really priddy. Lolly has embroidered one of her cushions, Lilly has found a love of making her bed and using it as a daybed. Now even though the room is very far from 'finished' (that will evolve over time) I find myself back to the comfy position of being able to say 'take us as you find us!'
Photos will follow - just want to check that the older girls dont mind me sharing.

oohh dear you are now giving me ideas that I could fit one more kiddy in afterall ! We too have just started clearning out the kiddies rooms, I have told them they can sell anything they don't want either in a yard sale or on-line and they were spurred on to have a good clear out :-)
ReplyDeleteHave you tried freecycle, they sometimes have some fab furniture come up for free that needs a good home and maybe a lick of paint.
I use to love redoing my bedroom when I was growing up. I am sure your girls are thrilled for a bit of organization and a fresh start. Sounds like you are well on your way to that sleepover!
