I don't know...
but what I do know is that I have a bike that has been on my list of wanties for many a year and it came to me for FREE!!
My Grandpa used to 'do up' old bikes, proper old ones - big and heavy.
I had one of his bikes, but it was just too big and heavy to be practical to use with ease in our very hilly area and I sadly took it to the dump.
We live in the High Wycombe, it is a very hilly area and we live at the top of one of the tallest spots - either way you look at it, to get home will involve getting up a hill!
So as much as I wanted a bike I couldn't justify the money to buy one, I've been keeping my eyes open at the boot sales but to no avail. Recent posts from Mrs Custard, Selina Lake and others haven't helped things, but I bit my lip and muttered.
Roll on to this week, the week I decided we need to walk more.
If I'd been driving I would not have seen it...
but there with the bins, waiting to be collected was a lovely ladies bike!
I know what are the odds?
But that gave me a dilema, if I stopped to get it and take it home then we would be late for school, if I left it the bin men might take it *eeek*
I left it to fate...if it was there when I came by again on the way home then it was meant for me
And there in the rain a good hour later it was, still, by the bins {which had been emptied and it had been left}
*YAY*
It needs real work to it, brakes need fixing, both tyres are punctured, I know nothing about gears they may even need a look at too and it is missing mud and chain guards BUT here it is in all it's glory...
not vintage, not old not even that pretty {yet}

What you may ask do I have planned for it? Well......
I think it should be red or blue, maybe even with polka dots? It will definately need a basket at the front and possibly something on that back too...the seat is comfy but raggedy so will need a cover made.
Years ago when Lolly was little we bought a bike flag for her retro 'Raleigh Budgie' bike and I have a bit of a hankering for one of those too :)
But it needs to be all done on a shoe string budget...
I will ride it but in realistic terms it wont be often, certainly not till Fonzy starts nursery in September and I have a couple of free hours a day so I can't and wont fritter money away on something that will spend 90% of its time in a shed/garage.
What do you think then?
Am I not one of the luckiest people around?
Thank you to who-ever threw it out,
thank you to Gran {Im sure she had a hand in this}
I am truely grateful
It was obviously meant to be yours Nicky!!

Oooh, very lucky find!
ReplyDeletedefo Gran had a hand in this.. her wicked sense of humour has you riding back from sainsbury's with the weekly shop (I envisage a tow along cart attachment) and you peddling up our hill which as we both know is a training ground for Everest mountineers xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words on my blog (I must sound a right old witch I think!!!). However this bike is a real delight - perfecto mundo - deliciouso and gloriouso. My bike was £25 from the free ads and I tarted it with bits of frou frou and I am sure that you will do something similar. I reckon that there is no point (even if I had the money) to spend hundreds on a 'smart' bike that I would never have painted or decorated like mine. Hate to say it but I used a little tin of ordinary paint on my bike - it is now on its third colour way!! I spray painted the basket (soooo easy) - cheap flowers (£1 for THREE bunches in Poundland) - I tie my bunting in with garden ties and made a rough and ready seat cover with a basic triangle shape and a bit of elastic - the whole thing too less than an hour and half. Everyday I have people admire my bike and it adds a bit of sunshine as I scowl my way down the high street with my no pinterest placards!! (just joking with that last bit!). I am just embarking on making some panniers for all that French bread (in reality it is bread from the Co-op!!!) I buy. I look forward to seeing a photo when it is all done and of your trunk with ribbon around the edges (hides all the raggedy bits)
ReplyDeleteThank you again
best wishes
Jenny
How do you manage to scowl whilst singing for old umbrellas?!
